According to CNNMoney via Krebsonssecurity, Sonic Drive In was notified of suspicious activity last week that a credit card processing company noticed strange activity on customers’ cards. It is not clear how many restaurants or customers are affected. Krebs seems to think that millions of credit and debit cards may have been stolen at the point-of-sale and are now being ‘peddled’ on the black market.
As we learned with the Equifax breach a few weeks ago, the number of affected customers will be significant, if this is true. Sonic has over 3,500 locations in 46 states. I have searched for a press release from Sonic, but have not found one. I will reserve judgment until this is confirmed by Sonic, directly. If they do confirm it, I am sure that the CEO will suffer a similar fate.
