Yesterday, I received a letter from Chase announcing changes to the Anniversary Free Night on the IHG Rewards Credit Card.
The changes will be implemented on May 1, 2018. The program, as it stands, allows the free night to be used an any IHG property worldwide (based on availability). IHG has a portfolio of more than 5,000 properties worldwide. The most exclusive IHG properties can be booked for 70,000 points/night. This is a great benefit for a credit card that has an annual fee of $49.
Beginning May 1st, the free night will be capped at IHG properties that require 40,000 points/night. While this reduce the number of properties (a little bit more than 300) where the free night can be used, there is a ton of value to those that remain.
While I like trying to get the best redemption for my free nights, I can appreciate that over 90 percent of the IHG properties are still available. The free night stills offer a ton of value for me. I will keep my card open until they completely take away the benefit, which I do not think will happen.
