I am always on the lookout for great local food, especially barbecue.  Having tried a few local spots that were ok, I was resigned to the fact that there were not any barbecue restaurants in Wichita Falls that separated themselves from the rest.  This had been my reality for the past two years, but that all changed yesterday.  While at my “real job”, I overheard someone suggest Red Barn Butchers to some visitors.  I chuckled to myself because I had only known Red Barn as a butcher shop.  As I continued listening to the conversation, I soon realized that I had been missing out.

I decided to stop by Red Barn after work to experience the hot bar.  It is located just off of Kell East and McNeil Rd.  Red Barn shares the same parking lot as Planet Fitness.

Parking was not an issue at Red Barn.  The main doors opened into a large room.  To the right was everything a person needed to season their meat.  The shelves included dry and wet rubs, most of which are made locally.

Straight ahead was a large selection of meat.  The meat was processed in the big room in the back of the store.  Meat can be purchased in any increment that you want.

To the left was the dining area.  It included the hot bar, a television, and some tables.

The staff was really patient with me, I think they knew it was my first visit.  A plate from the hot bar includes a meat (large portion) and two sides or two meats (reduced portion) and two sides.  All of this could be had for $7!  Yup, $7!

I could not make a decision so I went with two plates.  The barbecue was served on Styrofoam because I got it to go (forgive the presentation). One plate consisted of a quarter chicken, three pork ribs, baked beans, and macaroni salad.

The other plate consisted of hot links, chopped brisket, baked beans, and potato salad.

The following is not an exaggeration, all of the food was amazing!  The dry rub used on the ribs and chicken was a little spicy but not overbearing.  I am usually not a fan of macaroni salad but this one was good.  The potato salad was surprisingly delicious as well.

Final Word

Red Barn Butchers was the best kept secret in Wichita Falls…WAS.  I am disappointed that it took me two years to enter this place.  The next two years will see me visiting at least weekly, I wonder if they have a loyalty program.
