I was supposed to be in New Hampshire this weekend for a guys’ weekend but I could not make the trip due to my son visiting the emergency room on Monday.  He is getting better but I did not feel comfortable traveling while he was recovering.  I canceled my United Airlines ticket and received the following e-mail:

Mr. Roberto Short,

Reservation, XXXXXX, was cancelled and the value of your ticket can be applied to future travel on United Airlines. Please note the confirmation number for your reservation. When you are ready to travel again, return to this cancelled reservation in Manage Reservations to make changes for a future trip.

It was great that I could cancel the ticket but I would have to pay a $200 rebooking fee.  As with my Avianca Airlines situation, I do not care to pay rebooking fees if I do not have to. The rebooking fee of $200 is half of the original ticket price.  I decided to reach out to United Airlines’ Refund Department to see if they would refund the entire ticket due to my situation.  I have used United’s refund website for Wi-Fi refunds, but not for tickets…until now.

On Thursday, I submitted the refund request with a copy of my son’s discharge paperwork.  I was immediately sent the following e-mail:

Ticket number XXXXXXXXXXXXX has been submitted to our Refunds department. You will be notified when your request has been reviewed. Your tracking number is XXXXXXXX. 1 file(s) were attached to this request..

If you are requesting a credit card refund, please allow seven business days for processing. If your credit card refund is not posted within one billing cycle, please contact your credit card company. For all other forms of payment, including cash refunds, please allow 20 business days for processing.

I received the following e-mail from United’s Refund Department late yesterday:

Dear Roberto Short:

We’ve processed the refund today.

If your ticket was purchased using a credit card please allow 7-10 business days for the credit to post to your account. For check payments, please allow sufficient time for the check delivery. You may also view the refund details using the Check Refund Status link below and enter the 13-digit ticket number or 8-digit Request ID listed above.

Refund Amount/Currency: 419.60 USD

Form of Payment: MC ending in XXXX

Refund processed date: August 09, 2018

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you and we look forward to welcoming you on a future United Airlines flight.

Wow, talk about prompt. I am happy that they were able to resolve the issue quickly.  I thought for sure that I would have to eat the rebooking fee.  Thanks United.
